VSign applications can now be verified with a face scan taken on your phone, and no verification video is required when you use it. The scan usually takes a couple of minutes.
This applies to certificates issued by VSign. Other Certifying Authorities still record a short verification video at the time of application.
The two apps you need
Both must be installed before you start.
1. My vSign — the application you work in, published by Verasys.
Install for Android
or iPhone.
Package com.verasys.myvsign.
2. Aadhaar FaceRD — the face-capture service, published by UIDAI.
Install for Android.
Package in.gov.uidai.facerd. Android only.
Aadhaar FaceRD is the government’s own face-capture service, and My vSign calls it to perform the scan — the scan simply will not start if FaceRD is not installed. This catches most people out, because nothing tells you it is missing until the capture step fails.
Use the links above rather than searching the store. Lookalike apps using these names exist, and an imitation asking for your Aadhaar number is precisely what you do not want to hand it to. If you do search instead, check the publisher reads Verasys for My vSign and UIDAI for FaceRD. No legitimate app in this flow asks for payment, asks for your Aadhaar password, or wants permissions unrelated to the camera.
The seven steps
- Open face verification in the My vSign app.
- Enter your mobile number.
- Enter the OTP you receive.
- Tap Proceed.
- Enter your Aadhaar number.
- Capture your face when prompted. FaceRD opens to do this.
- Submit.
If the scan will not complete
- Nothing happens at the capture step. Aadhaar FaceRD is not installed, or an older copy of it is. Install or update it, then start again.
- The scan fails repeatedly. Face a window or a lamp rather than having the light behind you, hold the phone at eye level, and take glasses off. A plain background helps.
- Aadhaar number rejected. Check the digits, and check that the name on your Aadhaar matches the name on the DSC application. A mismatch between the two is the most common reason a verification is rejected outright.
- No OTP arrives. The number must be the one you gave on the application and must have signal. Wait for the retry timer rather than requesting repeatedly.
Do not keep resubmitting a failing verification. Repeated failed attempts can put the application into a state that has to be cleared before you can try again. Call us and we will look at it with you — this is the kind of thing that takes two minutes on the phone and an afternoon by email.
If you cannot use face verification
Face verification needs Aadhaar FaceRD, which UIDAI publishes for Android only. If you have an iPhone and no Android device to hand, or the scan will not work for you, the older route of recording a short verification video is still available on VSign’s portal: record your verification video.
Record it somewhere quiet and well lit, and read out whatever the screen asks you to read. If you are unsure which route applies to your application, call us first — we can see the application status and will tell you which one to do rather than have you attempt both.
What happens next
Once the verification is accepted, the certificate is approved and issued. You can check the status by signing in to VSign’s DSC portal with the credentials issued when you applied.
You then download the certificate onto your USB token with the Vsign DSC download utility, which needs your token driver installed first.
